Maud takes big lead, holds off Cumby comeback

Sept. 30, 2007 - CUMBY - The Cumby Trojans head into their bye week with a bitter taste in their mouths following a 37-20 loss to the Maud Cardinals Friday night.
Maud jumped out to a 34-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter on touchdown runs of 52, 16, 24 and 55 yards, while also scoring on a 27-yard touchdown pass.
Following a 26-yard field goal by Maud in the fourth quarter, Cumby (3-2) scored 20 unanswered points as Rodney Hobbs scored on a 40-yard run with 8:33 remaining in the game. The Trojans failed to convert the two-point conversion.
The duo of Brixx Hawthorne and Kris Stanford then connected on two touchdown passes of 13 and 21 yards for the 37-20 finale.
Hawthorne went 13-of-32 passing for 170 yards with one interception and two touchdowns. Stanford was the leading receiver with six catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns, Hobbs had three receptions for 42 yards, Michael Morris had three catches for 37 yards, and Nathan Dunnihoo had one catch for 14 yards.
Hobbs led the team in rushing yards with 57 yards on four carries, while Hawthorne had 14 carries for 23 yards, Dunnihoo had five carries for 16 yards, and Jake Vann had one carry for six yards.
