From Staff Reports
Sept. 28, 2007 - Dustin Gideon and Randy Blackmon locked in a duel for the Sulphur Springs Country Club men's championship on Labor Day that boiled down to the final hole.
In the 36-hole finale on Monday, Sept. 3, Gideon and Blackmon each shot a torrid 5-under par 67 on the opening 18 holes to set the standard. Blackmon had five birdies and no bogeys, while Gideon had seven birdies and two bogeys on Monday's opening round.
On the second round, Blackmon edged ahead of Gideon by two strokes with three holes to play in the match-play format.
On the par-4 No. 16, Blackmon chipped to within four feet of the hole for a sure par, but Gideon chipped in for a birdie to draw to within one point. Gideon, who is a freshman walk-on golfer at the University of North Texas, then won the final two holes to claim the club championship.
To get to the championship round, Gideon beat Kris Childress, Cameron Wilks and multi-year champion Kirk Walker. Blackmon got to the finals by defeating Bryan Burney, Judson Weaver and Patrick Rhodes.
On the women's side, Michelle Blackmon and Suzy Rost played in what has become an annual showdown for the club championship, and Blackmon (Randy's wife) won with a 76-81-157 total in the medal play format.
J.B. Garner beat Dan Humphrey 77-82 in the Senior Flight, and Garrett Landers edged Kason Childress 81-83 in the 13-Under Flight.
Cort Walker, a sophomore at SSHS, won the Men's Open Consolation, while Lynn Mills was the President's Flight Consolation winner.
The championship Monday ended with a barbecue and a 30-minute fireworks display from Jim Masters.
