Wildcats finish third in district tennis
From Staff Reports
Sept. 26, 2007 - LINDALE - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats team tennis squad finished the District 11-4A season in third place with a tough loss to the Lindale Eagles Tuesday afternoon.
"We went against Lindale and they are one of the top-ranked teams in the state," said SSHS head coach James Lovett. "We went down there and had a gallant effort but once again came up short. We showed a lot of poise against another top-rated team."
Lovett said senior Morgan McCormack had another hard fought match but lost in a heartbreaker, while on the boys side Chaz Hinkeldey played a grueling match but came up short.
"Overall, I was very pleased with the results so far this year," Lovett said. "We finished third in district which is not that bad considering that the top two teams are two of the best teams in the state."
He said the team will now prepare to travel to Corsicana for a dual match with Groesbeck and Corsicana on Oct. 2 and then the team has some more matches to wrap up the fall tennis season.
"We are going to work on consistency and trying to get more confidence and get some more wins," the coach said. "We should be improving and getting quite a bit better throughout the rest of the year."
With a team that is made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores, Lovett said he is confident about how the players compared to juniors and seniors this year.
"I saw a lot of good positive things during district team tennis and we are a very young team," he said. "We have a young team and we are junior varsity age kids playing at the varsity level. I think within the next two years we should be a vastly improved team."
