Yantis JH splits doubleheader

From Staff Reports

Sept. 25, 2007 - YANTIS - Yantis junior high split a fall baseball doubleheader with Avery winning the first game 4-3 on a dramatic three-run home run by Mark Carrasco and then the Owls lost the nightcap 11-1.

Cole Hill pitched a two-hitter in the opening win.

With Yantis down 3-1 and two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Carrasco belted a line drive over the left field fence some 300 feet away.

"It's the first time I have ever had a junior high kid hit one out of a high school park. Mark is just a seventh grader. The ball never got more than 15 feet off the ground," Yantis head coach Larry Tucker said. "Cole Hill pitched a great game. He only gave up two hits and struck out seven. It was great to have Ty Davis back. He did a great job behind the plate."

Tucker said he now has 18 boys from grades six to eight playing on the team.

"We try our best to get every kid in at least a couple of innings. That's why we play two games," he added. "Coach Phillip Poarch has been working with the kids most of the time and they have really improved."

Yantis travels to Saltillo next Monday to face the Lions at 4 p.m.
