Young Wildcats win three games, tie one

Sept. 21, 2007 - Sulphur Springs won three games - all by shutout - and tied another in subvarsity football action on Thursday.

The SSHS junior varsity and freshmen "B" team both beat Sherman, while the SSMS eighth-grade "A" team whipped Pine Tree and the "B" team tied the Pirates.

Junior Varsity

SSHS 33, Sherman 0

The Wildcat defense totally shut down Sherman, allowing just 47 total yards and four first downs. In addition, the Wildcats intercepted a pass and Kedrick Dial recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.

Offensively, quarterback Colton Lee completed 10-of-15 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns. Two of his TD passes went to Lemarcus Kendricks, who caught five balls for 99 yards, and the other went to Garrett Ferguson, who also had an interception on defense.

Running back Devion Hill carried 10 times for 71 yards, and Kerry Duffey carried six times for 14 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, linemen J.B. Beachem and Demarcus Reeves had strong games along with linebackers Jacko Spataro and Diquence Morris.

The JV evened its record at 2-2 on the season.


Sherman "A" 48, SSHS 26

The ninth-graders lost their first game of the season as a Sherman running back scored four offensive touchdowns and returned interceptions for two more TDs.

The Wildcats got three touchdowns from running back Joe Scott, but turned the ball over four times.

SSHS "B" 30, Sherman 0

The freshmen "B" team received four touchdowns from four different players and stayed unbeaten (4-0).

Preston Thompson had a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown, David Mobley scored on a long run, and Tanner Gilbreath and K.C. Macon also added TDs.

Eighth Grade

SSMS "A" 40, Pine Tree 0

SSMS quarterback Justin Owens went 5-for-5 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns as Kris Ford had an 11-yard touchdown reception and teammate Kendrick Daniels had a 60-yard TD.

Daniels also rushed for 102 yards on six carries with two touchdowns, Kryshad Ivery had a 65-yard touchdown and converted a two-point conversion, Kody Chester had five carries for 32 yards and two touchdowns and Cody Clayton had one carry for 32 yards and also had 43 yards receiving.

Defensive standouts were Garrick Mosely, Chester and Clayton.

SSMS "B" 14, Pine Tree 14

Blake Macek went 3-for-5 passing for 50 yards and one interception. He had a 31-yard completion to Jordan McLarry in the game.

Calise Frazier rushed for 110 yards on 11 carries and one TD, while Sala Liem had three carries for 14 yards and one TD. Liem also ran for a two-point conversion.

Defensive standouts were Blake Barnett and Frazier.

The middle school Wildcats will host Clarksville next Thursday with games at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
