Yantis takes Cumby championship

Sept. 10, 2007 - CUMBY - The Yantis Lady Owls won a hard-fought match against host Cumby in four games to win the Cumby Invitational Volleyball Tournament title Saturday night raising their season slate to 16-1.
Lady Owl Isy Reyna was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player with teammates Jamie Gilliland and Holly Madden earning All-Tournament medals.
Scores for the championship match were 25-19, 9-25, 25-23, 25-11. The Lady Owls won the first game in a back-and-forth affair before Gilliland served out after Yantis had taken a 22-19 lead on a Baylee Gilbreath kill.
Game 2 was all Cumby as the Lady Trojans simply blasted the Lady Owls scoring the final nine points of the contest for the 25-9 win.
The Lady Owls regrouped and fought back in the third game. It was 24-23 when Cristina Tauzen's serve was unable to be returned to give Yantis the close 25-23 victory.
The fourth game belonged to the Lady Owls as they never let Cumby get untracked. Gilbreath and Reyna each had strong serving games for Yantis.
For the match, Gilliland had seven kills four digs and three assists; Tauzen six kills, four assists, two aces and a block; Reyna five kills, eight digs, four assists and two blocks; Amanda McKinney four kills, five digs and three assists; Gilbreath four kills, four digs, two assists and two blocks; and Madden three kills four digs two assists and one ace.
The Lady Owls reached the finals after avenging their only loss this season by beating Class 2A Lone Oak 25-20, 24-26, 25-14, in the opening round Saturday morning, and then beating district rival North Hopkins 25-19, 25-18.
Yantis won their pool play Thursday afternoon easily defeating Class 3A Quinlan Ford 25-11, 25-18, and then beating Detroit 25-15, 25-12 in a match much tougher than the scores indicated.
"It was a great team effort in each of the games. This group works very hard and plays with intensity," Yantis head coach Dana Gilliland said. "They were embarrassed after that second game against Cumby and showed a lot a character coming back the way they did. I am very proud of all the girls. Each one on the team contributes to our success."
