Rains' turnovers lead to points for Gladewater
From Staff Reports
Sept. 9, 2007 - EMORY - The Emory Rains Wildcats dropped their season opener to the Gladewater Bears Friday night in Wildcat Stadium. The Wildcats committed four turnovers, which led to 14 points for Gladewater, in the 35-27 loss.
Although Rains caught a break by recovering a Gladewater fumble on the first offensive play of the game, it was a pair of Wildcat fumbles that led to the first points of the game.
The Wildcats' first offensive possession began on the Gladewater 45-yard line after a fumble on the first play of the game. Rains drove down inside the Gladewater 30-yard line, where they faced a third-and-4, when the drive was derailed by a fumble of their own.
Rains began its second possession at its own 38-yard line by forcing Gladewater to turn the ball over on downs. The Wildcats drove across midfield when they lost their second turnover.
Gladewater quarterback Devvyn Eddington scrambled 26 yards on a broken play to give the Bears a 7-0 advantage. Gladewater seemed poised to ad to its advantage when Rains muffed the following kickoff and Gladewater pounced on it. However, the Wildcats held for four downs and then took over at their own 31-yard line.
Rains then followed with an 11-play drive that spanned the 69 yards to even the score. Jake Ferguson made a spectacular 15-yard reception on a deflected pass on fourth-and-7 at the Gladewater 27 to keep the drive alive.
Three plays later Kenneth Cawthon scored the Wildcats' first touchdown of the year on a 1-yard run. Colby Hoover followed with the point-after kick to even the score at 7-7.
Gladewater and Rains then exchanged a pair of long-distance touchdowns on the next two possessions. Julian Griffin took a short pass near the home team's sideline then slipped a pair of tackles and raced 47 yards to give Gladewater back the lead.
Rains answered right back when Hoover caught a Taylor Marshall pass near the Gladewater 33-yard line. Hoover found a seam in Gladewater's defense and raced to the end zone for a 60-yard touchdown play that evened the score at 14-14 with 5:43 remaining in the half.
Gladewater responded with a 52-yard touchdown play on an Eddington-to-Griffin pass. Rains defensive lineman Tyler Cauthon broke through the line to block the pint-after kick to make the score 20-14 at the half.
Another Rains turnover on the opening possession of the second half allowed Gladewater to extend its lead. A 27-yard touchdown run by Cameron Price, along with Price's run for the two-point conversion, gave Gladewater a commanding 28-14 lead.
Rains caught another break midway through the third quarter when Ferguson intercepted an Eddington pass and returned it to the Gladewater 13-yard line. The Gladewater defense held fast following the interception, but when Rains received Gladewater's first punt of the evening at the Gladewater 35, the Wildcats followed with a score to cut their deficit.
A 22-yard run by Montrea Hobbs followed by another run of 8 yards set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Marshall that made the score 28-21 with 1:17 left in the third quarter.
Gladewater and Rains exchanged long touchdown drives to start the fourth quarter. Gladewater extended its lead back to 14 with Eddington's 19-yard touchdown pass to Travis Scott. Rains followed with a 55-yard drive that resulted in Christian recovering a Rains fumble in Gladewater's end zone for the Wildcats' final score of the night.
On third-and-goal on the Gladewater 4, Cawthon took the hand off from Christian, in as quarterback, and plowed towards the goal line. As he neared the goal line he extended his arms and the football when the ball came free. Christian, who was just a few feet inside the end zone, saw the ball bounce towards him and he scooped it up for the touchdown. The point-after kick was blocked leaving the 35-27 final score.
Rains had one last chance to even the score, but when Gladewater converted on third-and-17 it became a matter of running out the time.
Friday night the Wildcats will travel to White Oak to take on the White Oak Roughnecks.
