Sept. 1, 2007 - MOUNT VERNON - The Mount Vernon Tigers foiled a late two-point conversion attempt to secure a 35-34 win over the Lone Oak Buffaloes on Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

MV's Stanley Wood batted down quarterback Brittan Dodwell's pass at the goal line and J.J. Fountain covered Lone Oak's onside kick attempt on the following kickoff to put the finishing touches on a game the took 3 hours and 18 minutes to complete.

Mount Vernon trailed 28-14 midway in the third quarter when Lone Oak drove 74 yards in 15 plays for a touchdown on the opening possession of the second half. The Tigers answered with touchdowns on their next three possessions to take a 35-28 lead, their first lead of the game.

Tiger quarterback Christian Butler started the rally by finding Frank Hall for a 28-yard pass that moved Mount Vernon down to the Lone Oak 17-yard line. Two plays later Butler found Taylor Mayes in the end zone with an 8-yard touchdown pass to make the score 28-21.

After forcing a Lone Oak punt, Mount Vernon drove 60 yards in 13 plays to even the score at 28-28 with 7:37 remaining in the fourth quarter. Twice during the drive Butler was able to come up with dramatic completions to keep it alive.

Facing third-and-6, Butler found Hall with a pass across the middle that moved the Tigers into Lone Oak territory. Later, Butler completed a 13-yard pass to A.J. Rockwell on fourth-and-8 that advanced the Tigers to the 13-yard line. Butler capped the drive five plays later by plowing into the end zone on a 1-yard quarterback sneak.

The Tigers need just one play on their next possession to take their first lead of the game. With the ball on the Mount Vernon 20-yard line, Butler let sail a pass down the Lone Oak sideline. With a defender setting up for an interception, Rockwell timed his jump perfectly and reached over the defender and pulled the pass in near the midfield marker. He then spun around and saw open field as he sprinted for the end zone. Chance Campbell added his third PAT kick of the game to make the score 35-28 with 5:32 remaining on the clock.

However, Lone Oak wasn't finished.

Cooper Jones found Trenton Overly wide open for a 45-yard pass that quickly put Lone Oak on the Mount Vernon 10-yard line. Three plays later Bo Hood darted into the end zone to pull Lone Oak to within one. Wood broke up the pass attempt for the two-point conversion leaving a 35-34 final score.

Friday night the Tigers will host the Brownsboro Bears. The game is scheduled to begin with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
