Miller Grove ends up co-champs with Yantis

Oct. 24, 2007 - FRUITVALE - The Miller Grove Lady Hornets wrapped up the District 18-A regular season as co-champions after surviving a five-game battle with the Fruitvale Lady Cats on Tuesday.

The Lady Hornets won 16-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-20, 16-14 to finish district with a record of 7-1, the same at Yantis.

Yantis and Miller Grove will have a one-game playoff to determine playoff seedings. The date, time and place are to be determined.

"This is the first time since 1999 that we have been co-district champs," MG head coach Melissa Kethley said. "The girls didn't really have a very good game, but they kept fighting and pulled it out. All of their hard work paid off and now it is playoff time."

Kethley said in the fifth game, Fruitvale held a 14-11 lead and was one point away from the victory, but her team was able to rally and win.

Natalie Bailey led Miller Grove in kills with 16 to go along with four blocks, Haley Potts had a team-high 17 assists along with 27 service points, and Angelic Rios had 23 points and one kill.

Adrian Estrada had 12 points and 12 assists, Becca George had 14 points, two blocks and nine kills, and Jena Burns and Mareyna Pillard combined for 10 points.
