Wilder, Combs lead SB boys, MG girls to cross country titles

Oct. 24, 2007 - LAKE BOB SANDLIN - Hopkins County runners dominated the District 19-A cross country meet on Monday, both individually and in the team standings.
Sulphur Bluff's Everett Wilder and Trey Henderson took first and second in the boys race, while Miller Grove senior Stormy Combs won the girls title on the Lake Bob Sandlin course.
Sulphur Bluff, which missed a perfect score by one place in the boys race, had six runners finish in the top 10, while Saltillo had three.
In the girls race, Miller Grove won the team title with three runners in the top 10, while Saltillo took third to qualify for the regional meet as well.
The Class A, Region III meet is set for Saturday, Nov. 3 at North Harris County College in Humble. The top three teams and 10 individuals from the regional meet will qualify for state.
Hopkins County will be well-represented at regional from District 19-A as Sulphur Bluff and Saltillo dominated the meet.
Along with Wilder and Henderson, Sulphur Bluff runners Colt Nichols, Ismael Gutierrez, Gerardo Rodriguez and Zach Hope finished fourth through seventh. Also running for the Bears was Jeremy Hatfield. Wilder ran the course in 18 minutes flat, while Henderson finished the course in 18:30.
Saltillo's Alturo Trejo interrupted the Sulphur Bluff run with a third-place finish and his teammates Alex Nunez and Colton Smith finished eighth and ninth.
Also running for Saltillo were Chris Richey, Dillon Hamilton, Fabian Muela and Brett Moore.
On the girls side, Combs won for the second consecutive year and qualified for regional for the third straight time. She led a strong Miller Grove contingent to the team championship.
MG freshman Haley Potts placed fourth individually and senior Lacey Roberts was ninth. Also competing for the Lady Hornets were Rebecca George, Angelic Rios, Casey Millard and Jamie Hayes.
Saltillo's girls, led by a fifth-place finish from senior Jessica Gilbreath and a 10th-place performance from freshman Brooke Lane, placed third overall. Other runners for the Lady Lions were Winter Johnson, Sarah Clover, Kirsten McLane and Emily White.
The junior high races were also contested on Monday, and Saltillo took first place and Sulphur Bluff second in the girls competition.
For Saltillo, Brittany Patridge and Luz Nunez placed third and fourth,while Erika Mobley and Tiffany Goldsmith were seventh and eighth. Also competing for the Lady Lions were Amanda Fowler, Ravin Simmons, Karli Brewer, Courtney Goldsmith, Chelsea Moore, Ashten Moss and Chanda Neal.
For Sulphur Bluff, Kaitlyn Hancock was second with a time of 13:07, while Makayla Potts and Virginia Rodriguez were eighth and ninth, respectively.
In the boys race, Sulphur Bluff and Miller Grove finished first and second, while Saltillo was fourth.
Saltillo was paced by Clayton Jones' fifth-place finish. Also running were Landon Camp, Adam Moore, Richey Clover, Dean Shores and Nick Boekhorst.
For the Bears, Clint Wolf finished first in a time of 11:03, Ken Wade was second in 11:21, and Dillon Harred was 10th in 12:43.
