Only Fruitvale stands in way of Yantis-MG showdown

Oct. 23, 2007 -MILLER GROVE - The Miller Grove Lady Hornets, tied for first place in District 18-A, will take on third-place Fruitvale today after disposing of North Hopkins on Saturday.

The Lady Hornets won 25-12, 25-9, 25-11 to improve to 6-1 in district.

Natalie Bailey led the team in kills with 14 to go with two blocks, Adrian Estrada had a team-high 18 assists along with 11 service points, and Becca George contributed 22 points, four blocks and six kills.

Estrada and Bailey were recognized before the match as the Lady Hornets' senior players.

"The girls were pretty fired up," MG head coach Melissa Kethley said of the Senior Night. "They came out passing well, but their serving was off. The girls' attitudes were positive and they communicated well, which kept things rolling in our direction."

Miller Grove's Angelic Rios added 18 point, Haley Potts contributed 10 points, five assists and three kills, and Jena Burns and Kasey Burns combined for 11 points.

Lady Owls win a thriller

YANTIS - The Yantis Lady Owls claimed their share of the District 18-A volleyball crown with a 23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 27-25 victory over a tough Fruitvale squad on Friday.

The Lady Owls were down 17-24 in the fourth game and made an incredible comeback to win 27-25 over the Lady Bobcats.

"I am so proud of these girls. We played smart and focused in the last three games. We showed a lot of character coming back in that last game," Yantis head coach Dana Gilliland said. "We just have to wait and see what happens when Fruitvale plays Miller Grove."

Junior Amanda McKinney had a great overall effort with five aces, four kills, two tips for scores, a dig and two assists. Holly Madden recorded five kills, one tip, three digs, two blocks and three assists, Isy Reyna had an ace, four kills, two tips, two digs and two assists, Baylee Gilbreath had four kills, a tip, three digs, three blocks and three assists. Jamie Gilliland had one ace, one kill, three tips, three digs, and five assists, and Traci Glenn had one kill, four assists and two blocks.

A Miller Grove win at Fruitvale Tuesday will make the Lady Owls and Lady Hornets district co-champions and a playoff game will have to be played for playoff seeding.

The Lady Owls finished district play at 7-1 and 25-2 overall.
