Rebels use defense, special team to beat Cooper

Oct. 14, 2007 - JOHNTOWN - Rivercrest returned two interceptions for touchdowns and kicked three field goals to provide the difference in the Rebels' 37-26 victory Friday over the Cooper Bulldogs.
Cooper took a 6-0 lead in the first period on a 34-yard run by Andre Larry, who also had a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown runs.
But, Rivercrest took the lead for good in the second quarter when the Rebels' Procter sandwiched a 30-yard interception return for a TD in between two field goals by Hollingsworth of 22 and 25 yards. Hollingsworth added a 37-yard field goal in the fourth period.
Cooper drew to within 20-14 in the third quarter on Gaylon Bacy's 1-yard TD run and his conversion run. But, Rivercrest's Lyles returned an interception for a TD on the next Bulldog possession, then the Rebels' Lum added a 44-yard TD run.
Cooper is now 1-2 in District 15-2A, 1-6 on the season. Rivercrest improved to 1-2, 4-3. Both teams trail Chisum (3-0), Prairiland (2-1) and DeKalb (2-1) in the standings.
Bacy ended the game with 97 yards rushing on 17 carries, while Larry had 66 yards on 11 totes. Garrett McGraw led Cooper receivers with 79 yards receiving on five catches.
The Bulldogs actually out-gained Rivercrest, 276 total yards to 251.
Cooper's Garrett Wilson had two tackles for losses and recovered a kickoff, while PeeWee Jeffery added a fumble recovery. Ellis Hinsley led all tacklers with 12 stops.
