Young Wildcats start district off the right way

Oct. 12, 2007 - Sulphur Springs started the District 11-4A football campaign the right way on Thursday, sweeping Mount Pleasant in four subvarsity games.

The JV, freshmen "A" and both SSMS teams beat Mount Pleasant, while the freshman "B" team also had a successful non-district result against Gilmer.

Junior Varsity

SSHS 28, Mount Pleasant 20

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Wildcats (3-3 overall, 1-0 in district) got two rushing TDs, a passing touchdown and a special teams score to fend off Mount Pleasant.

Lemarcus Kendricks caught a 70-yard touchdown from quarterback Colton Lee and also scored on a 12-yard run. Running back Jimmy Villa added a 1-yard TD run, and linebacker Jacko Spataro blocked a punt and recovered the loose ball in the end zone for another score.

Demontra Morris kicked all four PATs.

Defensively, Tyler Higginbotham forced two fumbles. Recovering fumbles were John Tsai, Diquence Morris and Demarcus Reeves.


SSHS "A" 27, Mount Pleasant 26

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Wildcats (5-1, 1-0) fell behind 20-0 in the first half before engineering the comeback victory.

Sulphur Springs cut the deficit to 20-6 by halftime on an 80-yard TD connection between quarterback Tripp Reeves and Tylan Harris. Reeves threw two TD passes which went to Irvin Anderson and Sharrord Timmons. Joe Scott scored a rushing touchdown.

The Wildcats took a 27-20 lead, then Mount Pleasant scored to cut the lead to one point. Sulphur Springs then stuffed the two-point conversion to seal the victory.

Defensively, Scott, Dylan Owsley and Chad Evans all played well, and Adrian Johnson made a touchdown-saving tackle late in the game.

SSHS "B" 18, Gilmer 0

GILMER - The freshmen "B" team stayed undefeated at 6-0 with a solid defensive effort.

Offensively, David Mobley threw two TD passes, one each to Chris Duran (45 yards) and Preston Thompson (6 yards). Justin Sewell also returned an interception for another Wildcat touchdown.


SSMS "A" 34, Mount Pleasant "A" 16

Cody Clayton and Kendrick Daniels had two touchdowns each for the Wildcats (3-1, 1-0) in their win over Mount Pleasant. Garrick "The Moose" Mosely had one touchdown while quarterback Justin Owns threw for three on the night.

Defensive standouts were Sean Hoffman, Kody Chester, Ethan Boatman Mosely and Kris Ford, who had an interception.

SSMS "B" 30, Mount Pleasant "B" 0

Tafari Long, Adryan Johnson, Jordan McLarry and Francisco Garcia each scored touchdowns for the Wildcats (2-0-2, 1-0) in their shutout win.

Defensive standouts were Garcia, Blake Barnett and Shykem Middleton.

SSMS Blue 8, SSMS White 8

In the "C" team game, the Sulphur Springs Blue team had a touchdown by Josue Leon, while the White team had a touchdown from Kyle Smith.

Defensive standouts for the Blue team were Landon Shevear and Cody Winchester, while the White team had strong performances from Ryan Mize and Jakarian Shaw.
