SSMS girls place second in tournament

Oct. 10, 2007 - EMORY - The SSMS eighth-grade "A" team took second place at the Rains Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, winning two matches and losing one.

In the first match, the Lady Cats defeated Commerce, 28-30, 25-16, 15-9, with Jessica Horton leading SSMS with 13 service points and 31 sets, while Katie Cooper had 10 points and three kills, and Hannah McCampbell added seven points.

Gracie Cable led the squad in passes with 15, while Alyssa Doughtie had a team-high nine kills and Reagan Humphries had three kills.

The Lady Cats then defeated Bonham in three games, 25-16, 21-25, 15-7. Cooper led the team in scoring with 18 service points, including 10 in a row, while Cable had eight points.

Victoria Calhoun led in passes with 13, Cable had nine and Katie Dougan eight. Horton had a team-high 18 sets, to go with two kills, and Humphries led the team in hits with seven,

In the championship match, the Lady Cats lost to Rains 25-19, 25-15. Horton had seven points, 12 sets and one kill, Cable added 12 passes and four points, Humphries had five hits, and Doughtie, Calhoun and Ayanna Taylor had seven passes each.

On Monday, the Lady Cats "A" and "B" teams swept Texas High in a doubleheader.

The "A" team won, 25-16, 25-14, as Horton led the team with 12 points and 10 sets, while Cooper and Cable added eight points each. Cable also had eight passes. Humphries had a team-high six spikes and Dougan added three.

The "B" team defeated Texas High 25-7, 25-14 behind 21 service points from Katie Stewart, six points from Kirstie Wallace and five points from Melinda Escobar.
