This time, Rains uses turnovers to its advantage

Oct. 7, 2007 - EMORY - Turnovers haven’t been kind to the Rains Wildcats lately. That changed on Friday.

The Wildcats converted a pair of turnovers into 10 points for a 23-8

win over the Mount Vernon Tigers at Wildcat Stadium.

Rains recovered a Mount Vernon turnover at the Wildcat 5-yard line, then drove 80 yards to set up a Devon Anderson 30-yard field goal that gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead at the half.

Rains took the first possession of the second half and drove 58 yards to

extend its lead. Montrea Hobbs darted through a hole in the middle of the

line for a 5-yard touchdown run and a 9-0 Rains advantage.

Mount Vernon responded on the very next possession. The Tigers drove 60 yards in 12 plays where A.J. Rockwell caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Christian Butler. Butler then connected with Rockwell on the two-point

conversion which made the score 9-8 with 3:08 left in third quarter.

The two teams then traded punts with Rains gaining advantage at the Mount Vernon 38-yard line. Three plays later, Colby Hoover pulled in a tipped pass from Taylor Marshall then stepped into the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown. Hoover added the point-after kick to increase the Wildcats’ lead to 16-8 with 9:55 remaining in the game.

With the defense needing to make a stand to let the score hold up, Rains

defender Dakota Barker intercepted a deflected pass and raced 31 yards for

another Wildcat touchdown. Anderson added the point-after kick to make the score 23-8.

The Tigers weren’t done yet. Mount Vernon drove 63 yards in 10 plays to move into scoring position. But after converting on fourth-and-1 earlier in the drive, the Tigers failed to convert on fourth-and-3 and gave up possession on the Rains 17-yard line. They got the football back two plays later when they recovered a Rains fumble, but again gave up the football on downs.

Jake Ferguson sealed the win for the Wildcats with his second interception of the game. This time he picked off Butler’s pass near the Rains 25-yard line and returned it to the 40 where the Wildcats ran off the final seconds.

Friday night the Wildcats will begin district play by traveling to Commerce to take on the Tigers at Texas A&M-Commerce Memorial Stadium. The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
