Saltillo girls now 7-0; Yantis wins again

Nov. 21, 2007 - In girls action, the Saltillo Lady Lions remained undefeated on the year with a big-win over North Hopkins and McLeod this week, while Yantis and Como-Pickton were victorious.

Meanwhile, in boys action, the Yantis Owls improved to 5-1 on the year with a win over Dodd City.

Girls

Saltillo 45, North Hopkins 20

BIRTHRIGHT - Following a championship win in the Saltillo Invitational tournament on Saturday, the Saltillo Lady Lions remained undefeated with a 45-20 win over North Hopkins Monday night.

The Lady Lions (6-0) received 12 points from Winter Johnson and 11 points from Emily White.

The Lady Panthers had eight points from Cayla Newkirk.

On Tuesday night, the Lady Lions had a strong game from Methe and Johnson as the duo scored 17 and 14 points respectively in the Lady Lions win over McLeod.

Saltillo took advantage of an 11-2 run in the third quarter to take a 33-15 lead after three quarters.

Yantis 29, Dodd City 24

YANTIS - Amanda Collins hit 9-of-15 free throws and scored 13 points to lead the Yantis Lady Owls to a low-scoring 29-24 win over Dodd City.

Yantis led 12-10 at the half and 18-12 heading into the final quarter before pulling the game out in the final munites with tough defensive play.

Others scoring for Yantis were Stephanie Hogg with five, Shelby Allen, Amanda McKinney and Blanca Reyna all with three and Teresa Ortiz with two.

Collins had a big night on the boards bringing in 12 rebounds and Reyna added 10 boards.

The Lady Owls evened their season record to 2-2 and will face Roxton on the road Tuesday after the Thanksgiving break. 

Como-Pickton 60, Commerce 56

The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles improved to 6-1 on the year with a hard-fought 60-56 win over Class 3A Commerce Tuesday night.

The Lady Eagles had 16 points from Maci Kight, Kaycee Thomas added 13 points, Katie Moss had 12 points and Mollye Lay added 11 points. Rebecca Humphrey and Shelby Harrison each had four points.

Boys

Yantis 62, Dodd City 46

YANTIS - The Yantis Owls rolled to their fifth win in six games this year with a hard-fought 62-46 over Dodd City.

The teams traded buckets in the first quarter which ended with Yantis leading 17-15. The Owls poured in 21 second quarter points behind Tony Garcia and Cord Burnett to take a 38-29 halftime advantage.

The second half was a little slower paced with the Owls gaining a 24-17 edge to make the final tally 62-46.

Houston Tibbs led Yantis with 14 points and 10 rebounds followed by Zach Leatherwood's 13 points and 10 rebounds. Daniel Cerretani added 13 points with Garcia hitting for seven, Burnett five and Terry Thompson four. Jordan Davis and Bryan Green each had three points.

Davis added nine rebounds and six assists. Leatherwood also had six assists. The Owls had 12 turnovers.

"We have really cut down on our turnovers and it has really helped to make us more successful. It was a great team win tonight," Coach Larry Tucker said. "Tibbs (Houston) and Leatherwood (Zach) both had great efforts. Davis (Jordan) played tough defense and hustled on both ends of the court."

The Owls take the rest of the holiday off and will return to action on the road at Roxton next Tuesday night.

Saltillo 52, McLeod 40

After falling in the championship game of the Saltillo Invitational Tournament, the Lions bounced back with a double-digit win over McLeod Tuesday night.

Saltillo had three players in double figures led by Kenneth Poor with 15 points, Steven Mobley with 13 points and Jocsan Gamez with 11 points.

The Yantis JV moved to 2-0 with a 43-21 win over Dodd City.

Chase Phillips led the scoring with 11 points followed by Cody Stephens with seven, Eddie Herrera six, Matthew Crayton five, Mike Hogg, Kevin Mullins and Justin Sherrill four each, while Darren Burgess scored three points and Bernie Gomez added two points.
