Lady Cats take third at Ford tournament

Nov. 19, 2007 - QUINLAN - The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats split their final two games in the Quinlan Ford Roundball Round-up over the weekend to finish third in the tournament.

The Lady Cats held a double-digit lead over Rockwall Heath in Friday's semifinal game before falling 41-37, then whipped Bonham 56-14 in the third-place game on Saturday.

The Lady Cats (3-2) return to action today when they travel to Greenville to take on the Lady Lions. The freshmen start at 4:30 p.m., followed by the JV at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30.

Rockwall Heath 41, SSHS 35

The Lady Cats held Heath to just two points in the first quarter and staked themselves to a 20-11 lead at halftime. But, Heath outscored Sulphur Springs 30-15 in the final two periods to pull out the victory.

SSHS senior Starkeisha Wright led the team with 12 points, but was held without a field goal in the second half. Senior forward Stephanie Conley scored 10 points and junior guard Mackenzie Cross added seven. Sophomore guard Stefanie Pruitt hit a pair of 3-pointers.

Heath was led by junior post Sequenna Thomas, who scored a game-high 16 points.

SSHS head coach Tina Carrillo missed the game due to illness, but said the Lady Cats just failed to close out the victory.

"I understand we got up as much as 15 points and had a lead with a little over a minute to go, but just didn't make the plays down the stretch," she said.

SSHS 56, Bonham 14

The Lady Cats put the clamps on Bonham, allowing no more than six points in any period.

Sulphur Springs, led by 12 points from Pruitt and 11 points from junior forward Delandria Lewis, took an 11-4 lead after the first period and went up 22-8 at halftime.

Conley and senior guard Jessica Savage each scored nine points and Cross added eight points, six rebounds and five assists. Savage hit three 3-pointers to go with six steals, while Conley led the team in rebounding with 10.
