Trojans take on Tenaha in area round

Nov. 19, 2007 - CUMBY - After a first-round bye in the Class A state playoffs on Friday, the Cumby Trojans return to the field for the Class A, Div. II area round matchup against the Tenaha Tigers.
The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Jack V. Murphy Stadium in Gladewater.
Tenaha (8-3) comes into the game following a 58-34 win over Union Hill in bi-district last Friday night.
Tenaha was the District 20-A champion this season after defeating Carlisle 40-18 in the season finale two weeks ago.
For Cumby, the Trojans come into the playoffs with a 6-4 record after a third-place finish in District 17-A. Cumby missed out on the playoffs last season after finishing in a three-way tie for second in the district standings.
Sophomore quarterback Brixx Hawthorne leads the Trojans offense as they have averaged 33 points per game during the regular season.
Hawthorne has 104 carries for 919 yards and eight touchdowns rushing, while throwing for 1,546 yards on 94-of-226 passing with 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions this year.
His favorite targets are Kris Stanford, Timmy Cook, B.T. Brown, Michael Morris, Nathan Dunnihoo and Rodney Hobbs. The Trojans will also use Dunnihoo, Brown, Jake Vann and Rodney Hobbs in the running game to control the pace of the game against Tenaha.
The winner of the game will face Grapeland or West Sabine in the Region 3, Division II finals next weekend.
The Wolfe City Wolves and the Boles Hornets will also open up their playoffs as Boles takes on Maud, while Wolfe City battles Joaquin this weekend.
