Saltillo, NH advance in both brackets: Action continues today; championship games set for Saturday

Nov. 16, 2007 - SALTILLO - The Saltillo Lady Lions won two games in opening round action at the Saltillo Invitational Tournament, while Avery, Como-Pickton and North Hopkins advanced to the winners' bracket on Thursday.

In boys action, Avery, Sam Rayburn, North Hopkins and Saltillo won their opening round games and will battle for a chance to advance to the tournament championship today, with the championship game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Girls

Saltillo 53, Rivercrest 40

The Saltillo Lady Lions held a 29-17 lead at the half, but were outscored 16-5 in the third quarter to hang onto a 34-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Lions then outscored Rivercrest 19-7 to put the game away.

Saltillo senior Stephanie Methe scored a game-high 21 points for the Lady Lions, while freshman Brooke Lane added 14 points.

The Avery Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 24-8 lead at the half in their opening round win.

Tyranie Ricks and Tasha McCarty scored in double figures for the Bulldogs with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles improved to 3-0 on the season by outscoring Sam Rayburn 21-2 in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Eagles were behind 23-21 at the half and held a 40-37 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Kaycee Thomas had a game-high 15 points, while Katie Moss and Rebecca Humphrey scored 13 points each for the Lady Eagles.

Yantis was led by Amanda Collins with 17 points and Stephanie Hogg with 13 points.
