SS girls notch first victory in OT
From Staff Reports
Nov. 14, 2007 - It took an overtime period, but the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats notched their first win of the season, 61-54 over Crandall on Saturday.
After a 47-47 deadlock at the end of regulation, the Lady Cats outscored Crandall 14-7 in the extra period. Senior post Starkeisha Wright and senior forward Stephanie Conley combined for just five points in the first half but finished with 18 and 14 points, respectively.
The teams were tied at 18-18 at halftime as Sulphur Springs had just one field goal in the second period.
"We had a really slow start offensively and it seemed as if the preseason chaos ended for us finally after the first half," said SSHS head coach Tina Carrillo. "In the second half, we were able to get in sync with one another and we were able to look more like a solid team instead of the preseason chaotic look."
Still, the Lady Cats fell behind by eight points in the second half before rallying behind a defensive effort orchestrated by Conley and junior guard Mackenzie Cross, who finished with 13 points. Senior guard Jessica Savage added eight points including a 3-pointer.
"Stephanie Conley had an unbelievable game. She's such a versatile player. She had some great plays on defense that turned into Starkeisha points. Mackenzie also had a big steal and bucket when we needed it," Carrillo said.
