CP, Saltillo girls, Yantis boys win in prelude to Saltillo Tournament

Nov. 14, 2007 - The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles and the Saltillo Lady Lions are undefeated heading into the Saltillo tournament this weekend.

Saltillo, the No. 5-ranked team in the state in Class A, Div. II by the TGCA and No. 6 by the TABC, defeated Avery 48-35 on Tuesday, while the Lady Eagles defeated Lone Oak 59-40 on Friday, then narrowly defeated Cooper 33-31 on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in boys action, the Yantis Owls whipped Greenville Charter School, 88-26.

Girls

Como-Pickton

The Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Buffs 59-40 last Friday night and then defeated Cooper 33-31 last night in Cooper.

Against Lone Oak, senior guard Katie Moss led the team with 17 points, senior post Kaycee Thomas and junior post Maci Kight had 12 points each, Shelby Harrison had six points off of the bench and senior guard Rebecca Humphrey had four points. Other players scoring were senior point guard Mollye Lay with three, and sophomore guards Saxe Daugherty and Skye Brumley with one point each.

In the game against the Cooper Doggettes, Moss and Kight led the team with eight points each, while Thomas had seven points, Humphrey had six points, Lay had three points and Jordan Carlock had one point.

In JV action, the Lady Eagles went 0-2 in their games as they lost 10-3 to Lone Oak and 32-12 to Cooper.

Against Cooper, Lindsey Watkins, Julia Chance and Dawnyell Spaid had four points each, while Deanna Garrett and Breanna Peoples had two points each.

Saltillo 48, Avery 35

AVERY - The Lady Lions had two players in double-figures in their season opening win over Avery as Stephanie Methe led the team with 19 points and Winter Johnson scored 14.

Saltillo held a 19-12 lead at the half and a 31-23 lead after three quarters.

Avery was led by Tasha McCarty and Tyranie Ricks with 14 points each.

Boys

Yantis 88, Greenville Charter 26

YANTIS - The Yantis Owls rolled to a 37-5 first quarter lead and coasted to an 88-26 win over Greenville Charter School in the season opener on Tuesday.

The Owls opened up a 22-0 advantage in the firs two minutes of the game scoring numerous easy buckets off a zone press.

"It was just one of those nights when everything worked real well for us. Everybody played and every kid scored," head coach Larry Tucker said.

For Yantis, Daniel Cerretani had 19 points, Randy Smith 13, Terry Thompson 12, Bryan Green 10, Zach Leatherwood 8, Houston Tibbs and Carl Jordan 7 each, Allen Rose 5, Jordan Davis 3, Tony Garcia, Cord Burnett and Zach Wester 2 each.

Davis, Burnett and Cerretani each had three assists and Green led the rebounding with seven followed Smith's five.

"We did a good job of moving the ball around and showed a lot of team effort," Tucker added. "Our goal is to improve with each game and be ready when district starts in January."

Saltillo Tourney

Five Hopkins County schools will arrive in Saltillo on Thursday for the start of the boys and girls Saltillo Basketball Tournament.

The boys bracket will have eight teams and the girls bracket will have nine. The Saltillo boys and girls will each try to get revenge on Sam Rayburn, who beat them in both championship games last year.

Other Hopkins County teams in the tourney include Como-Pickton, North Hopkins, Sulphur Bluff and Yantis.

All games will be played in the Saltillo High School gym.
