Win moves Rains one step closer to playoffs

Nov. 4, 2007 - NEVADA - The Rains Wildcats kept their playoff hopes alive Friday night with a 26-7 win over the Nevada Community Braves. The Wildcats improve their record to 4-5 overall, 2-2 in district and move into a tie with Community for the final playoff spot in District 10-3A.

Defense determined the outcome of the game. The Wildcats created a pair of turnovers in the first half to jump out to a 12-0 lead. Then twice in the second half the Wildcats turned the Braves away deep in their own territory to preserve the win.

Dakota Barker ended Community's first possession by recovering a Marcus Underwood fumble to jump start the Rains offense. Montrel Christian put the Cats on the scoreboard nine plays later with a 1-yard touchdown run for a 6-0 lead.

Following a pair of punts, Taylor Marshall cut short another Community drive by intercepting a Tanner Marshall pass near midfield. He returned the interception to the Community 1-yard line, where Montrea Hobbs plunged into the end zone to give Rains a 12-0 lead with 7:39 remaining in the second quarter.

After another Community punt, Rains put together a six-play scoring drive that spanned 40 yards. Hobbs capped the drive with a 20-yard touchdown run. Colby Hoover added the point-after kick to make the score 19-0 with 3:02 remaining in the first half.

With momentum clearly in their favor, the Wildcats regained possession on their own 41-yard line with 25 second remaining on the clock. Christian dashed for 18 yards on the first play, then Taylor Marshall connected with Colby Hoover for a 41-yard touchdown pass that gave the Wildcats a 26-0 lead at the half.

Community came out on the war path to begin the second half. Tanner Marshall scampered for 20 yards, then Marcus Underwood followed with a 7-yard run to move the Braves to the Rains 35-yard line. Then facing fourth-and-6, Marshall completed a 34-yard pass to Ross Hutchinson that put the Braves on the Rains 1-yard line. Marshall scored on a 1-yard run and Hutchinson added the point-after kick to make the score 26-7.

Community made adjustments during the half that quieted the Rains offense in the second half. After receiving a punt near midfield, Community drove inside the 5-yard line where the Rains defense held on downs.

Community got the ball back and again marched deep into Rains territory before the Braves were turned away on downs.

Community's hopes of a late rally came to an end when Colby Hoover picked off a halfback pass and returned it to the Rains 34-yard line. Rains consumed nearly all of the final five and a half minutes as they drove inside the Community 10-yard line before turning over possession with three seconds left in the game.

Friday night the Wildcats play host the Royse City Bulldogs while Community travels to Wills Point to take on the Tigers. A Wildcat win or a Community loss will put the Wildcats in the playoffs.
