Top 12: McDaniel closes state tourney with 75

From Staff Reports

May 9, 2007 - AUSTIN - Whitney McDaniel wanted to finish her high school career as one of the top 10 golfers in Class 4A.

She came mighty close on Tuesday.

McDaniel finished in 12th place in the UIL State Golf Tournament, played Monday and Tuesday at the Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin.

After shooting a round of 81 over the first 18 holes on Monday, McDaniel came back with a 75 on Tuesday, the ninth-best score of the day. That moved her up to 12th overall with a two-day total of 156.

"My goal was top 10 or at least shoot in the 70s both days," McDaniel said. "I didn't do both of those, but I did come out with a strong finish last round."

McDaniel said her putting came around on Tuesday, enabling her to lower her score by six strokes.

"My putting was a whole lot better the second day," she said. "I was sinking putts left and right the first nine holes, and I didn't do that the first day.

The 5,727-yard, par-71 course yielded just one 36-hole total that was under par, by Lisa McCloskey of Montgomery, who won the individual title with a 141 total. Montgomery also won the team title with a 307-229-606.

McDaniel was playing as a medalist after finishing fourth individually at the Class 4A, Region II tournament. She was the District 11-4A champion and Monday night was named the MVP of the golf team.

Her focus, though, was improving her game from Monday to Tuesday. For the last week, she had been working on her short game.

"I did a lot of work 100 yards on in," McDaniel explained. "I worked on 30-50 yard shots and worked on putting."

She started getting serious about playing golf in the eighth grade and has improved each year. Earlier this season, she shot a personal-best 74, that is believed to be the lowest tournament score ever by an SSHS female golfer.

Next year, she will play for East Central University in Oklahoma.

For her senior season, she went out on a high note.

"It's great to be in top 12," McDaniel said. "It's crazy to be in the top 12 golfers in 4A. My goal was top 10, but I was just three strokes behind."
