Playoffs continue for three county teams

May 8, 2007 - The match-ups have been set for three Hopkins County teams trying to make it farther down the playoff road.

North Hopkins and Saltillo will each play a best-of-three series this week in the area round of the baseball playoffs. Meanwhile, in softball, North Hopkins tries to reach the regional semifinals when it takes on Martins Mill later this week.

The North Hopkins boys will get their first taste of playoff action tonight when they take on Overton at 7 p.m. in Gilmer. NH (15-11) is coming off a bye after winning District 17-A. Overton (15-6) was the 20-A runner-up, and swept a depleted Yantis squad in the first-round playoff series.

Saltillo, coming off a three-game series win over Simms James Bowie in the bi-district round. The Lions will face Price Carlisle in a three-game series beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday at Longview Pine Tree. Game 2 is set for 1 p.m. Saturday in Pine Tree, with Game 3 to follow, if necessary.

The Lions finished as runners-up in District 17-A, while Carlisle was the 20-A champion.

In softball, North Hopkins is in the Region III quarterfinals against Martins Mill, a team the Lady Panthers narrowly defeated twice this season. The game is set for 7 p.m. Thursday in Fruitvale.

North Hopkins whipped Union Hill 13-0 in the area round, while Martins Mill defeated Campbell 11-3.

The winner will advance to the regional semifinals to take on the winner between Slocum and Cross Roads.

Others

In Class 4A, all of the District 11 softball teams are out of the playoffs following the area round.

North Lamar beat Whitehouse in bi-district, but fell to Forney by scores of 4-1, 0-2, 1-0 in area. Lindale, likewise defeated Marshall in the opening round, but lost to McKinney North, 1-3, 5-3, 5-2. Mount Pleasant received a first-round bye, then were shutout by Mesquite Poteet in two straight games, 1-0, 3-0.

In baseball, Texas High received a first-round bye and will take on Highland Park this week. North Lamar lost to Kilgore in bi-district, 1-0.
