NH, Cumby pick up district wins

Mar. 27, 2007 - North Hopkins and Cumby each picked up a District 17-A baseball victory on Friday.
North Hopkins 16, Sulphur Bluff 4
SULPHUR BLUFF - The North Hopkins Panthers improved to 2-0 in District 17-A with a run-rule victory over Sulphur Bluff on Friday.
North Hopkins' Jeremy Dixon went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, Joe Smiddy went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI, Ricky Willis went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Lorenzo Rivera went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. Jy'Darius Hawkins and Bradley Ball each had a hit, and Steven Crocker hit a double and drove in three runs for the Panthers (8-9).
Smiddy picked up the win by allowing four hits, three walks and six strikeouts in four innings. Dustin Clements pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
For Sulphur Bluff (1-9, 1-1 in district), Nichols went 2-for-2, and Hale, Austin and Reichle each had a hit. Littrell pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief without allowing a baserunner.
Cumby 14, Campbell 2
CAMPBELL - Trojan pitcher Jeffery Smith (4-1) picked up his fourth win of the season on Friday, allowing only one earned run on three hits and no walks in a game halted by the run rule.
"Jeffery had a good command of his fastball and was able to mix in off-speed pitches throughout the lineup," said Cumby head coach Scott Mabe. "He had good movement all night. He has worked really hard on his location, and it showed tonight."
Josh Rodriguez homered for the fourth time this year with a two-run blast in the first inning. Tanner Gomez had two hits, including a two-run double, and scored twice. Jason Wallace had two doubles and three RBI. Brixx Hawthorne had an RBI double in the first and Putter Potts had a run-scoring double in the fourth.
Cumby (8-7, 1-1) hosts Sulphur Bluff at 4:30 p.m. today.
