McDaniel's personal low of 74 wins tournament
From Staff Reports
Mar. 22, 2007 - ROWLETT - Whitney McDaniel shot the best round of her life, and one of the lowest tournament rounds ever by an SSHS golfer, in winning the Rowlett Invitational on Monday.
McDaniel shot a 74 on the Waterview Golf Club course to lead the Lady Cats to a third-place finish overall.
"Whitney really played great," said SSHS head coach Rahn Smith. "I believe that was the best round she's ever shot, even in practice.
"It was a tough course with lots of sand and huge, undulating greens. Even at that, Whitney shot the best round of her career."
Overall, the Lady Cats fired a 368, which was nine strokes behind Prestonwood Christian, which won the team title, and two strokes behind Frisco in second.
Sophomore Britney Cheatham shot a 90 and senior Kylie Littlefield carded a 94. Sophomore Kaitlyn Potts shot a 110 and freshman Miranda Conway had a 120.
"Britney is getting more consistent, and Kyle shot her best round of the year," Smith said. "Kaitlyn and Miranda continue to improve each week, but just haven't put everything together in one round yet."
If they continue shooting like they have, the Lady Cats should once again compete for a district title. The three-round District 11-4A tournament starts Monday at Paris Golf Club.
The district teams will play a different course each week for the next three weeks. After Paris, the tournament will continue in Mount Pleasant, then Texarkana.
"I think this showed that we're ready for district. We showed some consistency and some improvement," Smith said. "We shot our best round, of the year, as far as our team goes, so that should be a confidence booster going into district. I think we're ready."
He said the large greens of Waterview Golf Club showed the several girls need to work on their putting.
"They're not satisfied, which is good, and know they need to continue to work," Smith explained. "I think we're in pretty good position. If we want to stay consistent, I think we can stay around 370 or low 370s. If we do that, we can win."
