Wildcat golf finishes in 13th place at North Star Bank Invitational
From Staff Reports
Mar. 13, 2007 - DENTON - The SSHS golf team continues to work on its game as the district season approaches.
The Wildcats competed last weekend in the North Star Bank Invitational at Wildhorse Golf Club in Denton, and coach Doug Evans saw pluses and minuses for the team.
The Wildcats finished 13th with a 36-hole score of 684 (346-339), but he saw some encouraging progress from his young team that includes two freshmen and only one player, senior Dustin Gideon, who was a full-time varsity player last year.
Gideon, a three-time regional qualifier, had the best round for the Wildcats, shooting a 77-76 to total 153. He was 19th individually, 10 strokes out of first, held by McKinney North's Brooks Bankhead.
Evans said three holes kept Gideon from being in the top 10. He double-bogeyed 16 and 17 on Friday, then had another double bogey on Saturday when he hit into a deep bunker.
"Those three holes kept him from being in contention for the championship," Evans said. "Other than those three holes he played great. Even with those, he had a great tournament."
Freshman Adam Perry carded an 89 on Friday, then came back with an 83 on Saturday to finish with a 172.
"I was really proud of Adam Perry on Saturday by coming back to shoot a really solid score," Evans said. "If we could eliminate putting problems and penalty strokes, we could be scoring a whole lot better."
Senior Robby Moore and freshman Cort Walker both shot identical scores on Friday and Saturday. Moore had an 89-89-178, while Walker shot 91-91-182.
"Robby Moore played much better than his scores indicate," Evans explained. "He really hit the ball well, and Cort Walker is playing well until he gets around the green. If he can hone his short game he will really start scoring well because he has tons of talent."
Hesston Taylor finished with a 192 final score, but Evans said he improved on the final nine.
"After a rough start on Saturday, he came back to shoot a decent score of 43 on the back nine," Evans said. "That shows me he is learning from mistakes, and there is no quit in him."
The Wildcats will play in Mount Pleasant on Monday, then will start the first of three District 11-4A rounds the next week.
