Lady Cats wrap up regular season; Grand-Lienard rewrites record book

From Staff Reports

Mar. 13, 2007 - TEXARKANA - The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats finished the regular season against the last-place team in the district. They may have to start the postseason against the No. 1 team in the state.

The Lady Cats knocked out Texarkana Pleasant Grove 6-1 on Monday to conclude the regular season. They will start the postseason next week against either No. 1-ranked McKinney Boyd, No. 2-ranked McKinney or unranked Mesquite Poteet. They'll find out their opponent after Friday's games.

The Lady Cats already know who the school's top scorer is. Senior striker Gayle Grand-Lienard rewrote the SSHS record book with two goals on Monday to give her 31 in the season.

She had been tied with Ashley Petty, who set the record in 2004, with 29 goals. Grand-Lienard's two goals both came off assists from D'Kota Hutchings.

Sophomore forward Bonnie Grafton added a hat trick and an assist, and Karlie Junot had a goal and an assist.

Kai'la Petty had three saves in goal as the Lady Cat defense turned away most Pleasant Grove scoring opportunities.

Sulphur Springs (7-2-0-1 in district, 12-6-2 overall) finished third in District 16-4A behind Paris and North Lamar. The Lady Cats will face the second-place team in District 15-4A in the first round of the playoffs, but they don't know yet who that will be.

Currently, McKinney leads the district, but is only one point ahead of Mesquite Poteet and two points ahead of McKinney Boyd. On Friday, District 15-4A will conclude with Boyd playing Greenville and Poteet facing McKinney.

"We could be facing any of those teams, depending on what happens in those games," said SSHS head coach Martin Bryant. "We won't know until after those games who we will play."
