SS subvarsity teams combine for undefeated record in pool play

Mar. 9, 2007 - The Sulphur Springs subvarsity teams combined to go 5-0 during pool play in the Sulphur Springs junior varsity tournament Thursday.

The SS Gold team (JV) picked up wins over Wills Point 8-1, and Sherman 4-2, while the SS Blue team (freshmen) scored victories over Winnsboro 4-1, Commerce 3-1, and Athens 11-0.

SS Gold also defeated Wylie 13-0, though the game did not count in the pool standings. No individual stats were available for the gold team.

For SS Blue, Chelsey Hampton went 5-for-6 with six stolen bases, three runs scored and one RBI, Spencer Martin went 3-for-8 with a stolen base, two runs scored and three RBI. Martin also had an inside-the-park home run for the Lady Cats.

Baylee Speaker led the team in RBI with four and had 22 strikeouts in the circle.

Elizabeth Sheffield and Jami Scroggins each went 2-for-6 and Sheffield had two runs scored and two RBI.

Both teams advanced to the Gold Bracket as SS Gold, coached by Michelle Barron, plays Commerce at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lady Cat Park, while SS Blue, coached by Kendra Trantham, plays Sherman at 10 a.m. at Coleman Field No. 1.

In the other Gold Bracket games, Mount Pleasant faces Frisco Centennial at 11:30 a.m. at the high school, while Frisco and Wylie battle at 11:30 a.m. at Coleman Field No. 1.

1 p.m. - Prairiland-Royse City winner vs. Paris (Coleman No. 3)
