Lady Cats take team title at Garden Valley
From Staff Reports
Mar. 8, 2007 - LINDALE - Led by an 81 from senior Whitney McDaniel, the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats posted a tournament-low 389 Wednesday at the Lindale High School/Garden Valley Invitational.
On a tight course, the Lady Cats carded a 389 to beat out second-place Kilgore by 17 strokes.
McDaniel, the district medalist last year, finished third overall at the tournament with an 81. Kelsey Kirkpatrick of Alba-Golden topped the leaderboard with a 75.
"Whitney had as really good day with an 81, which shows some consistency, which is what you want going into district," said SSHS head coach Rahn Smith. "The other girls, most of them were consistent with what they had been scoring, and on that course, that's pretty good."
Sophomore Britney Cheatham came in with a 97, senior Kylie Littlefield carded a 103, sophomore Kaitlyn Potts had a 108 and freshman Miranda Conway finished with a 114.
"We didn't play quite as well as we did last week, but I think it was a tougher course," Smith said of 383 score they shot at the Sherrill Park course in Dallas. "This layout was very tight. It wasn't one of those where they could take their driver out every time. You had to play every shot.
"Some of the girls didn't play their best, but they still scored OK. You're not going to have your very best game every time out on the course, and still coming up with shots to get the ball in the hole is the key."
The Lady Cats will play March 20 at Rowlett, then open the first of three rounds of District 11-4A on March 26 in Paris.
