June 30, 2007 - Are you ready for some softball?
Two Dixie state softball tournaments will start this weekend at Coleman Park, with three Sulphur Springs teams participating.
The Angels and Darlings state tourneys will have their opening ceremonies on Friday, then start play on Saturday.
Right now, though, the brackets are not complete. Because of excessive rain in much of North Texas, most of the five districts competing at the tournaments have not been able to crown a champion. With dry weather this weekend, the brackets should be set by Monday.
In the Angels division, the host team from Sulphur Springs will play the District 3 winner at 1 p.m. Saturday. The local team is coached by Mike Moore, Jamie Harris and Sharon Womack.
The Darlings will have two Sulphur Springs entries: the host team, coached by Rowdy Crowson, and the District 4 champions coached by Jill Dietze.
Dietze's team will take on the District 3 winner at 10 a.m. Saturday, while Crowson's team will play the District 5 champion at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Both tournaments are scheduled to conclude on Tuesday.
Coleman Park is currently the site of two district tournaments, moved to Sulphur Springs on a last-minute change of venue. The Ponytails and Belles divisions should crown their champions today.
In the tournaments for Sulphur Springs are the team coached by Betty Sapaugh in the Ponytails (11-12-year-old) and the squad coached by Wes Hampton in the Belles (13-and-over) division.
