SS Drillers win tourney opener

From Staff Reports

June 27, 2007 - The four Sulphur Springs youth baseball teams playing in Little League District 8 tournaments this week have been doing more sitting than playing.

Because of the rain, which has caused widespread flooding in North Texas, only one SS team has been able to play its first-round game.

The Sulphur Springs Drillers, playing in Pool A in the 9-10-year-old division, beat Dallas 5-1 on Monday at Coleman Park in Sulphur Springs. The Drillers are scheduled to play Denison Gold, a 12-2 winner over Irving, at 7:30 p.m. today at Coleman Park.

In the consolation bracket, Irving is scheduled to play Dallas at 7:30 p.m. at Coleman Park.

The Drillers staged a late-inning, come-from-behind victory in the tournament opener by scoring five runs in the fifth inning.

Sulphur Springs starting pitcher Kade Hudgins pitched three scoreless innings before Dallas scored its only run in the fourth. Sulphur Springs, hit the ball well, but had just one base runner (a single by Cain Cody in the first) early in the game. But, in the fifth, Hunter Coleman rapped an RBI double to right field after Dallas pitcher Riley Barnes had given up two walks to Tyler Williams and Ben Brooks. Ethan Phillips then drove home two runs with a single up the middle.

The final two runs scored when C.J. Stephens hit a sacrifice fly, and after Cody doubled to left, Hudgins followed with an RBI single. Larry Pryor also had a single in the inning.

Brooks and Stephens closed out the game on the mound without giving up a run.

If the Drillers win today (if the game can be played), they will advance to the eight-team championship round for District 8 next week. They will also advance if they lose but then beat the Irving-Dallas winner on Friday.

In other pool games in the District 8 tournament were pushed back. The SS Thunder, coached by David Maeker, is set to play North Garland at 7:30 p.m. today in Wylie in a first-round match-up. In Pool D, Sotero Ramirez's SS Rough Riders are scheduled to play Carrollton at 7:30 p.m. today in Farmers Branch.

In the 10-11-year-old division, Sulphur Springs' team coached by Scott Millsap is scheduled to open its round robin tournament against South Garland at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The tournament will continue with games on Saturday and Monday. All games are scheduled for Central Park in South Garland.

In the Little League Division (11-12-year-olds), Wayne Cooper's team is scheduled to open its District 8 Pool D play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Carrollton. The game is set for Thomas Park in Carrollton.

The Junior League team, coached by Jerry Riley, is scheduled to open its Pool B bracket at 7:30 p.m. Friday against The Colony, which is hosting the tournament.
