North Hopkins girls clinch playoff berth; Saltillo remains undefeated in district

Jan. 31, 2007 - It was a night of celebration for many Hopkins County teams on Tuesday as the North Hopkins girls clinched a playoff berth and the Saltillo boys and girls each wrapped up at least a share of their district championships.

The Yantis girls and boys did not get to join in the celebrations as they were swept by Quinlan Boles.

Girls

North Hopkins 65, Cumby 14

BIRTHRIGHT - North Hopkins wrapped up a playoff berth with a convincing win over the Lady Trojans.

The victory improved the Lady Panthers' record to 5-1 in District 18-A, Div. I (14-13 overall) and kept them tied with Boles atop the district standings.

NH senior Sabra Thomas scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds to pace the Lady Panthers, and freshman Tana Hall scored her season-high 11 points and had eight boards. Ebbonye Johnson added nine points, seven rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Junior Jessi Mannis led NH in steals (three) and assists (four) to go with nine points.

Courtney Stewart led Cumby with six points.

SALTILLO - Four Lady Lions scored in double figures, led by Winter Stevens with 23 points, Stephanie Methe with 18, Bekah Rogers with 14 and Chloe Roberts with 12 points as Saltillo won its 25th game of the season.

The Lady Lions (12-0 in District 22-A, Div. II) wrapped up the district championship with two games to play in the regular season.

The Lady Lions led 11-5 after one period, 35-17 at halftime and 62-19 after three.

Fannindel had three players score eight points each.

Quinlan Boles 50, Yantis 44

QUINLAN - The Yantis Lady Owls put up a valiant effort before falling to Boles 50-44 on the road Tuesday night.

The Lady Owls led 23-20 at intermission but Boles took a 34-30 lead into the final quarter.

Jamie Snider led Yantis with 17 while Jayna Bevill pitched in 15, Amanda Collins nine and Shelby Allen three.

Sarah Duran of Boles led all scorers with 21 including 7-of-11 from the free throw line.

Yantis travels to North Hopkins on Friday and ends the regular season at Cumby next week.

The JV girls won 30-27 over Boles behind 14 points from Isy Reyna and 10 from Stephanie Hogg. Traci Glenn had three, Rebecca Spurgeon two and Bailey Hunt one.

BOYS

Saltillo 77, Fannindel 53

SALTILLO - Senior Miles Payne led the Lions with a triple-double of 25 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists to go along with six steals in their win Tuesday night.

The Lions (21-5 overall, 12-0 in District 22-A, Div. II) clinched the district championship with the victory.

All nine players scored points once again for Saltillo as Kenneth Poor added 13 points and Travis Thompson and Stephen Mobley bucketed eight points each.

The Lions took a 32-6 lead after one period and a 41-15 lead at the half.

Quinlan Boles 55, Yantis 45 

QUINLAN - The Yantis Owls fell behind Boles 25-17 at the half after leading 9-7 the first quarter and fell to 3-3 in District 18-A .

The Owls fell behind by 18 early in the third quarter and then stormed back to within 45-42 in the final period, but could not overcome the Hornets, who now stand alone in second place.

Zach Leatherwood led Yantis with 10 points followed by Daniel Cerretani with nine, Jordan Davis and Tony Garcia with eight each, Cord Burnett six and Randy Smith and Jordan Thompson with two each. Daniel Sanchez led Boles with 17 and Eathan Foster hit 14.

"We just can't seem to put a whole game together. We never quit and fought to the end," said Yantis coach Larry Tucker. "Boles came out strong and played tough. Sanchez had a good game and Foster hurt us inside."

The Owls are now 3-3 in district and 13-12 for the year with a Friday date at North Hopkins and the regular season finale next week at Cumby.

In the junior varsity game, the Owls fell to Boles 26-22.

Justin Hunt led Yantis with seven points with Cory Thompson hitting six, Cory Ward and Eddie Herrera three each, Kevan Mullins two and Cody Stephens one.
