Sulphur Springs places four lifters in top five at first meet

Jan. 25, 2007 - ROYSE CITY - Sulphur Springs had four lifters place among the top five in their weight divisions Saturday at the season's opening powerlifting meet in Royse City.

Taylor Link, senior Tanner Higgins, senior Jeff Pitts and junior Tyler Francis each scored points for the Wildcats. A total of 11 from SSHS competed.

"Everyone did an awesome job at the first meet of the year," said SSHS coach Rodney Flowers. 

Link was the top finisher for SSHS, coming in third in the 123-pound weight division with a total lift of 610 pounds. The lifters compete in three different events: bench press, squat and power clean.

Higgins was fourth in the 148-pound classification with a 915-pound total, and Tyler Francis was fourth in the 220-pound division with a 1,055-pound total.

Pitts placed fifth in the 165-pound class with a total of 1,070 pounds.

Others who competed were freshman Shane McQueen (148-pound division) with a total of 825 pounds; sophomore Johnny McSheffery (165-pound division) with an 845-pound total; Josh Dunn (198-pound division) with a 1,030-pound total; freshman Jimmy Villa (198-pound class) with a 985-pound lift; freshman Daniel Dixon (198-pound class) with a 915 total; senior Jamal Freeman (242-pound division) with a 1,145-pound total; and junior Rodney Evans (275-pound class) with a 1,165-pound lift.
