|Yantis sweeps Union Hill, Saltillo continues winning streak|

Jan. 6, 2007 - The Yantis boys and girls opened District 18-A with a sweep at Union Hill on Friday, while the Saltillo boys and girls both ran their unbeaten district marks to 5-0 against Fannindel.
Como-Pickton was not as fortunate in its district game against Quitman, and the North Hopkins girls lost a close non-district contest against Class 3A Pittsburg, while the NH boys downed Maud.
Yantis 62, Union Hill 27
UNION HILL - Jamie Snider hit for 21 points while Amanda Collins pitched in 17 and Jayna Bevill chipped in 11 for Yantis.
Yantis raced to a 31-16 lead at intermission and were up 47-27 entering the final quarter.
Shelby Allen and Jamie Gilliland each hit four points with Amanda McKinney getting two and Blanca Reyna two.
The Owls (12-10, 1-0 in District 18-A, Div. I) return to the court Jan. 12 against Boles in a home contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Saltillo 61, Fannindel 20
LADONIA - The first-place Lady Lions had little trouble with Fannindel, outscoring them in every quarter.
Junior Winter Stevens scored 20 points to spearhead the Saltillo attack while junior Stephanie Methe added 14 and senior Chloe Roberts put in 10.
The Lady Lions improved to 18-1 overall and 5-0 in District 22-A, Div. I, while Fannindel fell to 2-3.

BIRTHRIGHT - Pittsburg exploded for 20 points in the fourth quarter to edge the Lady Panthers in their final non-district game.
North Hopkins held a 22-10 lead heading into the final period but couldn't convert at the free throw line, making 4-of-14 in the fourth quarter and 7-of-23 overall.
Jessi Mannis led North Hopkins (9-11) with 11 points, while Cayla Newkirk and Ebbonye Johnson scored six each.

COMO - Quitman built a 13-point halftime lead and held it to edge Como-Pickton by 10.
The Lady Eagles (1-3 in District 16-2A) was led by sophomore post Maci Kight with 14 points.
Shadawndra McNeal led Quitman (3-1) with 19 points, with Lindsey Weems adding 13.

UNION HILL - The Owls blasted to a 45-13 first half cushion and coasted to the 75-36 win over the Bulldogs.
Twelve Owls got in the scoring column led by Daniel Cerretani's 25. The Yantis sophomore had 21 in the first half.
Jordan Davis added 10, Jesus Olayo and Cord Burnett each had seven, Zach Leatherwood five, Houston Tibbs, Tony Garcia, Justin Boren and Jordan Thompson all with four each, Terry Thompson three and Bryan Green and Randy Smith one apiece.
Jordan Thompson also had 10 rebounds and six blocks. Leatherwood had eight rebounds and Davis had seven along with six assists. Leatherwood and Burnett each had five assists.
"We finally came out and played our kind of basketball for a whole game. It was a great team effort and it's nice to get a district win on the road," said Yantis coach Larry Tucker. "Everyone contributed, Cerretani was on fire in the first half and Jordan Thompson had a great defensive game."
The Owls are 11-9 and 1-0 in District 18-A and will face Boles on Jan. 12 at home. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Saltillo 73, Fannindel 43
LADONIA - Saltillo continued its hold on first-place by getting a 25-point effort from Miles Payne.
The Lions improved to 5-0 in District 22-A, Div. II, while Fannindel slipped to 3-2.
Payne had 21 of his 25 points in the first half when Saltillo built a 39-16 lead. Kenneth Poor added 16 points and Travis Thompson contributed 12 in the win.

North Hopkins 57, Maud 36
The Panthers held Maud to just 11 second-half points to break a 25-25 halftime tie.
North Hopkins had four players score in double figures as Dustin Clements led the way with 14 points, Roger Sancho and Rickey Willis each added 11, Steve Crocker put in 10 and Gerad Woodard scored nine.
"We blocked out real well on rebounds and played good interior defense," said coach Matt Rager, who said Maud had four players 6-4 or taller.
The Panthers (9-12) open District 18-A, Div. I play Tuesday at Quinlan Boles.
