SS freshmen start season 3-0

Feb. 28, 2007 - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats freshmen team has started the season 3-0 with a doubleheader sweep of the Mount Vernon JV on Saturday, and a victory over the Quitman JV on Monday.
Game 1: SSHS 4, Mount Vernon JV 1
Colby Suggs shutout the Tigers for four innings by striking out nine and only allowing one hit and two walks.
Josh Halcomb closed out the game allowing one unearned run.
Offensively, the Wildcats were lead by Shane McQueen with two walks, one hit and two runs scored. Jacko Spataro had a hit and run scored, and Colby Suggs and Mason Morton each had singles.
Game 2: SSHS 6, Mount Vernon JV 4
In a game shortened due to utility pole damage caused by high winds, the Wildcats capitalized on Mount Vernon miscues to score six runs in three innings.
McQueen was a top offensive producer with two runs scored, one RBI, one hit and a stolen base. Suggs had a single and Cade Wimberley walked twice.
Bryce Jenkins was on the mound for the Cats, allowing just two earned runs in four innings while striking out seven.
SSHS 7, Quitman JV 2
On Monday, Jake Dugan struck out seven and allowed just one earned run in four innings, then McQueen and Jenkins combined to throw three innings of one-run ball. Jenkins closed out the seventh by striking out the side.
Tyler Higginbotham started a two-out rally in the top of the second inning with a base of balls and stolen base. Wimberley followed with an RBI double, and Josh Halcomb and Conner Brackhahn then had a base hit each to give the Cats a lead they would not give up.
Offensively, SS was lead by Higginbotham who had three hits (single, double, triple) and a walk. Wimberly had two hits and scored twice as did Suggs.
The Wildcats will next see action Saturday as they travel to Crandall for a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. Their first home game is scheduled for March 14 against Quitman.
