Saltillo boys fall in area round

Feb. 24, 2007 - LONGVIEW - The Saltillo Lions got close to Laneville on Friday, but couldn't get past the Yellowjackets.
Laneville, ranked No. 20 in the state, held off Saltillo, 62-53, in the area round of the Class A, Div. II playoffs at Longview High School.
In his last game as a four-year starter for the Lions, Miles Payne bucketed 29 points, including 21 in the second half when the Lions tried to rally from a 10-point first-half deficit.
Payne hit a pair of 3-pointers, as did Jocsan Gamez, who scored six points. Travis Thompson added eight points and Stephen Mobley seven for Saltillo.
Laneville got off to a 12-6 lead as the Yellowjackets' Jeremy Taylor scored six of his 10 points in the first period. Laneville also led 28-18 at halftime behind 11 first-half points from Mark Carey. Carey finished with a team-high 21 points and Marcus Anderson added 15 for Laneville.
Saltillo, though cut the deficit to 41-35 by the end of the third quarter as Payne bucketed eight points in the period and Thompson had four. But, Laneville was able to pull away from the Lions in the fourth quarter.
The Yellowjackets will now face the winner between Dodd City and Neches in the regional quarterfinals next week.
