Lions, Panthers start playoffs tonight

Feb. 23, 2007 - The final two Hopkins County teams will begin their playoff journeys tonight.

The North Hopkins boys and Saltillo boys, who both earned first-round byes because they were district champions, will be in area round action tonight.

North Hopkins (18-14) will face Cayuga at 7:30 p.m. in Canton. North Hopkins won District 18-A, Div. I, while Cayuga finished second in District 19-A and beat Cushing on Wednesday, 54-45, in bi-district.

"They're long and athletic," NHHS head coach Matt Rager said of Cayuga. "We've got to defend well and shoot well to beat them."

The winner will play the Beckville/Bloomburg winner early next week in the regional quarterfinals.

Saltillo, meanwhile will take on Laneville at 6 p.m. today at Longview High School. Saltillo went through District 22-A, Div. II unbeaten, while Laneville finished second in District 23.

Laneville, which defeated Wells 62-44 in bi-district on Wednesday, is ranked No. 20 in the state according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll.

The winner will take on the winner between Dodd City and Neches early next week in the regional quarterfinals.
