Wildcat tennis opens with strong showing at Longview

From Staff Reports

Feb. 19, 2007 - LONGVIEW - The Sulphur Springs Wildcat tennis team opened up the season with a strong showing at the Longview Lobo Challenge on Friday.

The Cats finished first in the girls B doubles, second in mixed doubles and had several players in the consolation bracket in the 256-player tournament.

"This was a great tournament four us since this was the first competition due to bad weather this year," said SSHS tennis coach Susan Reynolds. "We haven't even been on the court in over two weeks, so to come away with a first place and second place championship and several kids in consolation was a tremendous effort."

The girls B doubles team of Lauren Longino and Jessica Henry defeated Diamond and Cameron of Spring Hill, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the finals, while the mixed doubles team of Brant Small and Aly Jackson lost to Lee and Aldredge of Spring Hill 3-6, 6-1, 4-6 in the finals.

Tara Moore finished fourth in the girls A singles with a loss to McFarland of Center, 1-6, 1-6.

"We had to pull out of boys B doubles due to illness, but our doubles and mixed doubles really played well as did our singles," the coach said. "We've had a couple of injuries and the flu in addition to the weather, and to come away with some success in certain divisions and close losses in others, I couldn't be more pleased."

Both SSHS doubles A teams made it to their consolation final. The boys team of Erich Hartin and Kyle Williams and the girls team of Kendall Smith and Morgan McCormack each lost in the consolation championship.

The SSHS netters will return to the court Tuesday at Paris.
