Playoffs matchups set for Saltillo girls and Yantis boys

Feb. 19, 2007 - The Saltillo Lady Lions have a chance this week to make the state take notice when they face off against the No. 1-ranked and defending state champion Kennard Lady Tigers.

The Lady Lions, ranked No. 11 in Class A, Div. II, will take on Kennard in the Region III quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Brownsboro.

Both Saltillo (27-1) and Kennard were given first-round playoff byes after winning their respective districts. Saltillo then beat Tenaha, 40-29, in the area round on Friday, while Kennard disposed of Dodd City, 62-29.

The winner will advance to the Region III tournament at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches this weekend to take on the winner between Newcastle and Strawn.

Wednesday's game will be the opener of a doubleheader. In the nightcap, Kennard's boys are playing Avinger in the bi-district round.


The Yantis Owls are getting ready for their first playoff trip in 18 years.

The Owls will take on Bloomburg at 8 p.m. Thursday in Gladewater. Yantis was the third-place team in District 18-A, Div. I, while Bloomburg was the runner-up in District 17-A.

The winner will face Beckville in the area round.

The Saltillo boys, meanwhile, received a first-round bye after winning District 18-A, Div. II. They will face the winner between Laneville and Wells in the area round later in the week.
