Lady Owls lose tough fight

From Staff Reports

Feb. 17, 2007 - BIG SANDY - The Yantis Lady Owls put up a valiant effort against District 20-A champion Mount Enterprise before falling 54-44 in an area championship game Friday in front of a large crowd at Big Sandy High School.

In the end it was Mount Enterprise (21-7) going 26-of-46 from the free throw stripe with Yantis only making 7-of-19 that made the difference in the game. Yantis was whistled for 34 fouls and Mount Enterprise 25.

The Galcats used a strong press to rattle the Lady Owls early and raced to a 16-4 lead with about two minutes to go in the first quarter. But Yantis sophomore Amanda Collins ripped a 3-point shot and freshman Shelby Allen hit a driving left-handed lay-up down the lane to make it 16-9 after one period.

Amanda McKinney came off the bench in the second quarter to spark the Lady Owls with seven points. Jamie Snider made two steals she turned into buckets as Yantis clawed back to a 28-23 deficit.

Foul trouble began to plague Yantis in the third quarter. Top rebounder Jayna Bevill and tough-nosed guard Collins each fouled out in the third quarter. Snider went to the sidelines early in the fourth followed by McKinney and Rachel Spurgeon.

"We have had a great year, and I can't say enough about these girls. They fought and scrapped and hustled every second," Yantis head coach Lane Loyd said. "I am very proud of what they have accomplished."

Spurgeon came off the bench to play a great second half before fouling out in the final minutes.

Snider led the Lady Owls with 14 points with McKinney hitting for 10 and Allen and Collins netting eight each.

Tyara Hogg led Mount Enterprise with 16 points, the only Galcat in double figures.

Loyd had to empty his bench, playing three players moved up from the junior varsity for the playoffs, when Yantis got into foul trouble.

"It's all been a great experience for these kids and the community," Yantis athletic director Larry Tucker said. "I can't begin to tell you how proud of Coach Loyd and his girls we all are. The future looks bright for Lady Owl basketball."
