Feb. 15, 2007 - After being frozen out of their season opener against Nevada Community on Tuesday, the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats hope to open their season Friday afternoon in the Richland Rebels Tournament.

The Lady Cats will play six games over a two-day period with a one-hour time limit for each game.

"Right now, we are having to shorten it down due to the weather. Our girls are doing a good job of adjusting," said SSHS coach David Carrillo. "I told the girls yesterday that this is a good time to evaluate. You don't have a whole lot of time, and with that time we are going to evaluate our personnel and talent and see where we need to place people."

On Friday, the Lady Cats will face Midland Lee at 1 p.m., Keller Fossil Ridge at 3 p.m. and Denton High in the nightcap at 7 p.m.

They will then turn around on Saturday and face Garland Lakeview Centennial at 10 a.m., Azle at noon and Richland at 4 p.m.

"This is going to be some really good competition, and I don't believe in the 4A and 5A hype. This is going to be some good teams and good quality pitching," the coach said. "We want to find the best competition that we can in these tournaments so that when district comes around we are ready to play."

Carrillo said his opening day starter will be junior Marci Womack against Midland Lee, but freshman Taylor Clifton and senior Tarra Morton will see action during the tournament.

""We are going to rotate them out and they are all on alert and ready to go," he said. "I will be moving kids around with personnel also during this tournament."

Following the tournament, the Lady Cats will have their home opener Tuesday against Wills Point. First pitch for the varsity action is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

"We play Wills Point on Tuesday here and we are excited to play at home," the coach said. "We want to be able to improve on the mistakes that we make this weekend and continue to get better before district."
