North Hopkins wins homecoming over Yantis

From Staff Reports

Feb. 5, 2007 - BIRTHRIGHT - Senior Steven Crocker scored a season-high 31 points, including 25 in the second half, to lead North Hopkins past Yantis, 66-60, before a large homecoming crowd.

Roger Sancho added 17 points and Rickey Willis 12 for the Panthers (16-11 overall), who have clinched the District 18-A, Div. I championship.

Yantis fell to 3-4 and into a tie with Quinlan Boles for second place. The Owls were led by Jordan Davis with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Jordan Thompson with nine points and nine boards.

"It was a great game. I am proud of the kids on both teams," said Yantis head coach Larry Tucker. "Steve Crocker was unstoppable for the Panthers. He played like a senior should play in a big game. For us, Jordan Davis had a career game, his best of the year. And my big senior Jordan Thompson played well.

"I think Coach Matt Rager has done an incredible job in his first year as a head coach. I believe North Hopkins has a good chance to advance past area if they continue to play team ball with the intensity I have seen in district," Tucker said.

Rager said his team "did a good job of getting Stevie the ball in the second half" and credited Sancho, Willis and Blake McClure with playing good defense. Gerad Wood had six points, including a lay-up with a minute left to put the Panthers up by six points.

Dustin Clements had four points while playing point guard in the absence of North Hopkins' usual two points guards.

North Hopkins shot 24-of-32 from the free throw line, as they continually tried to work the ball inside.

"I felt good about us buying into the game plan," Rager said. "We wanted to get the ball inside, and that's what gave us the edge."

He said Yantis is "always dangerous because they shoot the ball so well." The Owls also did a good job on the boards, he said.

"It was a great environment to play in, both sides of the gym were packed, and it was a good, clean game," Rager explained.

North Hopkins finishes off its regular season tonight when they host Union Hill for Senior Night.

Yantis faces a must-win game against Cumby on Tuesday.
