Saltillo boys and girls one win away from perfect district seasons

Feb. 3, 2007 - The Saltillo boys and girls are each one win away from sweeping through their 14-game district schedule undefeated after beating Miller Grove on Friday.

The North Hopkins girls also stayed on top of their district with a win over Yantis.


Saltillo 54, Miller Grove 28

MILLER GROVE - Saltillo moved one step closer to an unbeaten district season by pulling away from Miller Grove in the second half.

Saltillo led 26-23 at halftime, but held the Hornets to just five points over the final two periods.

Miles Payne led the Lions with 22 points, 14 of them in the second half, and Stephen Mobley added 10 points.

Saltillo, which has clinched the district championship, improved to 13-0 in District 22-A, Div. II and 22-5 overall. Miller Grove dropped to 1-12.

The Hornets were led in scoring by Yan Heijligers with 10 points.

Saltillo 51, Miller Grove 21

MILLER GROVE - Saltillo outscored Miller Grove in every period to stay unbeaten in District 22-A, Div. II.

The Lady Lions were led in scoring by Winter Stevens with 20 points and Chloe Roberts with 11. Stephanie Methe added seven.

Saltillo (26-1), ranked No. 11 in Class A, Div. II, has now won 22 consecutive games and clinched the district title.

Miller Grove (2-11) was led by Jamie Hayes with nine points and Rebecca George with eight.

BIRTHRIGHT - North Hopkins stayed tied with Boles atop the District 18-A standings with a victory in front of a homecoming crowd.

Senior Sabra Thomas scored 17 points, just one game after putting in a career-high 19 on Tuesday. Thomas also had nine rebounds. Ebbonye Johnson added 11 points and six rebounds, and Jessi Mannis had 10. points.

North Hopkins improved to 15-13 overall, 6-1 in district, the same as Boles, which beat Union Hill on Friday.

Jamie Snider scored a team-high 13 points for Yantis, which fell to 3-4 in district and is a half-game better than Cumby for third. Cumby was idle on Friday.

In the JV game, Yantis prevailed 21-16 in overtime. Virginia Thomas scored 11 points for the Lady Panthers.
