Hornets runner-up at Cumby; Wildcats on three game losing streak

Dec. 31, 2007 - The Miller Grove Hornets finished as the runner-up of the Cumby Tournament this past weekend with a 70-69 loss to the Como-Pickton Eagles, while the North Hopkins boys won their game over Mount Vernon.

Miller Grove's Yan Heiljigers was named All-Tournament as he averaged 19.3 ppg. during the tournament.

Sulphur Springs wrapped up their final tournament with a loss to Idabel, Okla. and will return home Thursday night to face Wills Point for the second time this season.

In girls action, the Miller Grove Lady Hornets defeated Rockwall Christian, 51-22, and lost two games in the Cumby tournament.

CUMBY - The Lady Hornets opened up the first round of the Cumby tournament on the losing end as Adrian Estrada scored a team-high 15 points.

The Lady Hornets trailed 19-8 after the first quarter, 27-19 at the half, and 40-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

CUMBY - Estrada scored a game-high 21 points for the Lady Hornets as Celeste pulled out the double-digit win.

MILLER GROVE - The Lady Hornets improved to 9-11 on the year with a double-digit win over Rockwall Christian.

Estrada and George scored in double figures for the Lady Hornets with 14 and 10 points respectively.

"The girls played well this weekend," said Miller Grove coach Gary Billingsley. "We were missing three player which left us short handed.

The Lady Hornets will face Roxton Friday at 6 p.m.

FOUKE, Ark. - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats wrapped up the 13th annual Century Bank/Fouke Classic with their third straight loss in a 52-42 loss to Idabel, Ok. Saturday evening.

"In the final game, we played good and it was a one-point game the whole way. It was a good game and we didn't really not play well we just didn't finish the game well," said SSHS first-year coach Braughn Curtis. "We made mistakes in key points and turned it over at the end and they made 13-of-19 free throws and we were 6-of-15.

"I thought this was a great tournament and playing good teams was good for us. That was a good representation of how our district is going to be and this was good for us."

SSHS is now 13-7 on the year and will return to Wildcat Gym for the first of a four-game home stand Thursday evening against the Wills Point Tigers. Tipoff for the varsity action is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

"These last three games are very important and I told the guys we need to punish people and get into the mood of we want to win and we got to win," the coach said. "We have to play well in these final three games.

Tyrick Rollison led the Wildcats with 13 points while classmate Colton Nash had 11 points.

The Wildcats held a 13-11 lead after the first quarter, a 22-21 lead at the half, and trailed 35-32 after three quarters of play.

BIRTHRIGHT - North Hopkins improved to 12-7 on the year with a win over Class 3A Mount Vernon on Saturday.

Both teams were tied at 11-11 after the first quarter of play as North Hopkins led 27-22 at the half. Mount Vernon battled back to within two at, 39-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

Paco Castro led the team with 18 points, while Canyon Cockrum added 13 points and Robert White added 10.

"Good defense and rebounding helped us get out and run our fast break that led to transition buckets," said NHHS coach Matt Rager. "We had a well rounded offensive night. We had kids step up and make shots and played good team basketball on offense."

The Panthers will return to the court Jan. 4 against Maud.

Como-Pickton 70, Miller Grove 69

CUMBY - Both teams battled back-and-forth throughout the game as Miller Grove led 22-15 after the first quarter before Como-Pickton took a 41-40 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Hornets regained the lead at 59-55 before Como-Pickton outscored Miller Grove, 15-10, in the fourth quarter to take the win.

Yan Heijligers scored a game-high 28 points for the Hornets, while CPHS was led by Chase Beck with 26 points.

"The kids played hard. I did not do a good job of managing the end of the game," said MGHS coach Gary Billingsley.

CUMBY - In the semifinals of the Cumby Tournament, the Hornets trailed 18-12 after the first quarter of play and took a 27-26 lead into the intermission.

Yan Heiljigers scored a game-high 23 points, while teammate Andrew Steele added 17 points for the Hornets.

Cumby was led by Kris Stanford with 22 points and Brian Clem with 16.

In the opening round of the Cumby tournament, the Hornets jumped out to an 11-0 lead after the first quarter of play and took a 24-10 lead at the half.
