Back to the Hardwood: County teams get back on the court

Dec. 27, 2007 - It's back to the hardwood this weekend for most of the basketball teams in Hopkins County.

The Sulphur Springs boys are traveling out-of-state to play in a tournament in Fouke, Ark., while several other teams will be in action in the boys and girls tournament in Cumby.

Sulphur Springs

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats get back to business following their Christmas break as one of 69 teams playing today in the Century Bank Fouke Classic.

Sulphur Springs (13-4) will take on Louisiana Class 5A powerhouse Bastrop at 3:20 p.m. today in the Fouke High School Gymnasium.

SSHS will return to the court tomorrow to face Magnolia, Ark. and then wrap up the Classic on Saturday against Idabel, Okla.

Games will be played at the high school, Fouke Middle School and Bright Star campus in Doddridge.

SSHS has been led this year by the inside presence of junior Colton Nash (10.1 ppg.), junior Jonathan Lee (9.0 ppg., 3.9 rpg.) and junior point guard Tyrik Rollison (7.5 ppg., 4.9 rpg., 4.4 apg.).

The Wildcats were originally scheduled to play in the Mount Pleasant Holiday Tournament, but the event was canceled this year.

Following the tournament, the Wildcats will wrap up their non-district schedule with three games at Wildcat Gym against Wills Point Jan. 3, Pleasant Grove next Saturday at 3 p.m. and Pittsburg, the No. 6-ranked team in Class 3A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, on Jan. 8.

SSHS will then open up District 11-4A with a three-game set against the Mount Pleasant Tigers on Jan. 11 at Wildcat Gym.

The SSHS girls will host Longview on Friday in the Lady Cats' first game in 10 days.

The games will get started at 4:30 p.m. with the freshmen, followed by the JV at 6 p.m. and the varsity at about 7:30.

The Lady Cats (8-9) will wrap up their non-district schedule the following Monday with an afternoon game at Royse City. They open District 11-4A on Friday, Jan. 4 when they host Texas High.

County Schools

The top-ranked Saltillo Lady Lions will take a break from District 22-A competition as they are scheduled to play Harleton on Friday. The Saltillo varsity boys are taking the weekend off and will return to action on Jan. 4 against Fannindel.

Sulphur Bluff will also take a district break as the Bears and Lady Bears host Detroit in non-district action, starting at 2 p.m. Friday.

Yantis will end its non-district schedule this weekend with a pair of games. The Owls and Lady Owls will host Grand Saline, starting with the JV boys at 1 p.m., on Friday, then travel to Detroit on Saturday for a tripleheader starting at 2 p.m.

North Hopkins boys will host Mount Vernon on Saturday with the JV game starting at 3 p.m. and the varsity to follow.

Meanwhile, Como-Pickton, Cumby and Miller Grove will all be participating in the Cumby tournament starting today and ending Saturday. A bracket was not available at press time.
