State-ranked Trenton takes 2 from Yantis; NH boys beat Cooper

Dec. 16, 2007 - Yantis faced a tough task on Friday, playing Trenton, whose boys and girls teams are both state-ranked. Yantis wasn't able to pull off the upset on the road.
North Hopkins boys did beat Cooper, though, for the second time this season.
Trenton 45, Yantis 42
TRENTON - The Yantis Lady Owls gave fifth-ranked Trenton all they could handle before falling 45-42 to almost spoil the Lady Tigers homecoming.
The Lady Owls fell behind 24-18 at the half and were down 34-22 late in the third quarter before rallying for 10 consecutive points to cut the Trenton lead to 34-32.
Trenton held on the final seconds for the win over the young Lady Owls, who have no seniors on the team.
Sophomore Shelby Allen led the scoring with 15 points for Yantis followed by Stephanie Hogg's nine, Amanda McKinney with nine, Rachel Spurgeon and Amanda Collins six each.
The Lady Owls travel to McLeod Tuesday to face the Lady Longhorns.
Trenton 73, Yantis 60
TRENTON - The shorthanded Yantis Owls fell to the 10th-ranked Trenton Tigers on the road Friday night.
Yantis' Daniel Cerretani hit for 19 points, Randy Smith 15, Jordan Davis 10, Cord Burnett scored eight, Allen Rose had five and Carl Jordan put in four.
The 11-5 Owls travel to Alba-Golden Tuesday night to play the Panthers.
North Hopkins 36, Cooper 24
Jy'Darius Hawkins led the way for the Panthers with 13 points as he went 7-of-9 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter at W.S. "Pete" Long Gymnasium Friday night.
The Panthers held a 17-9 lead at the half and a 25-13 lead after three quarters.
Cooper was led by Larry with seven points.
This was the second win for the Panthers against Cooper as they won, 46-42, on Dec. 4 at Cooper.

The Yantis JV team fell in a close game 34-32 to Trenton. Gerry Hernandez and Chase Phillips each had eight points for Yantis with Cody Stephens hitting seven, Matt Crayton five and Justin Hunt and Jereme Smith two each.
