Lady Cats lose late lead to Pleasant Grove

From Staff Reports

Dec. 10, 2007 - COMMERCE - The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats finished in fourth place at Commerce's Winter Classic on Saturday, losing a late lead to Texarkana Pleasant Grove.

Sulphur Springs (7-7) had an eight-point lead with four minutes to play, but couldn't close out the contest in a 47-45 loss.

SSHS junior guard Mackenzie Cross had a shot at the buzzer to tie, but the ball went in and out of the hoop. Cross finished with four points, five steals and three rebounds.

The Lady Cats built an eight-point lead in the first half on the basis of their outside shooting. Sophomore Stefanie Pruitt hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points, while senior Jessica Savage scored eight points, including a pair of threes in the first half before leaving the game early in the third quarter with a lacerated lip.

Senior post Starkeisha Wright, who was voted to the All-Tournament team, finished with 15 points and nine rebounds. Twelve of her points came in the second half when Pleasant Grove went from a zone defense to man-to-man to take away the Lady Cats' outside shooting, said SSHS head coach Tina Carrillo.

"I knew her (PG coach Shanna Marshall) adjustment would be to close down our outside scoring, which they did," said Carrillo. "They got out of their zone and into a man and took away our outside shooting.

"It seemed like we couldn't take away their 3-pointers and we were exchanging our two-points shots for their threes."

Pleasant Grove hit five 3-pointers and also made 12-of-20 free throws. SSHS shot just six free throws, making three.

Carrillo said the Lady Cats are getting mentally and physically tired, and she addressed that before Saturday's game.

"We came in a little early on Saturday because we were getting in some bad habits because of tournament play," she said. "We worked on getting ourselves mentally and physically prepared.

That was the final tournament of the season for the Lady Cats, who will be at home for two games this week. They will host Quitman on Tuesday and No. 1-ranked Winnsboro on Friday.

Start times for Tuesday's game are not definite because Carrillo isn't sure whether Quitman has a freshman team.
