Saltillo wins two championships at Cap Herman; NH boys capture third at Parish

Dec. 10, 2007 - The Saltillo Lions and Lady Lions won their respective championship games in the Cap Herman Tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Lions defeated Yantis, 43-19, while the Lions defeated Bloomburg, 54-22.

Boys

North Hopkins 42, Bland 35

BIRTHRIGHT - North Hopkins took third place in the Freeman Parish Tournament by making up an early double-digit deficit.

The Panthers found themselves behind 12-2 at the end of the first quarter, but cut the deficit to 21-20 by halftime and took a 31-26 advantage into the final period.

Roger Sancho scored a team-high 13 points by hitting 9-of-10 free throws and Paco Castro scored 10 points. Jy'Darius Hawkins added nine points, Canyon Cockrum scored eight and Kody Williams had two.

"We did a great job playing good defense and securing the position with good blockouts and defensive rebounds," said NH head coach Matt Rager, who singled out Calvin Brey for his interior defense. "We did a great job handling the ball at the end of the game against their pressure defense."

The Panthers will be in action again Tuesday as they travel to Celeste.

A 13-0 run in the second quarter gave the Lady Lions a 23-2 lead heading into the locker room against Yantis on Saturday.

Winter Johnson had a game-high 16 points, Stephanie Methe added 13 points and Brooke Lane added 12 points.

Yantis was led by Shelby Allen with eight points.

Derek McClure led the Lions with a game-high 19 points, while teammate Steven Mobley scored 14 points against Bloomburg.

The Lions held a 27-10 lead at the half and a 44-19 lead after three quarters.

For the second straight game, the Lions held a 27-10 lead at the half and were outscored 26-20 in the second half.

McClure had a team-high 17 points for the Lions as the only double-figure scorer.

In the opening round of the tournament, the Lions led 16-14 at the intermission and extended their lead to 34-20 after three quarters of play.

Steven Mobley had a game-high 16 points, while Derek McClure scored 11 points and Jocsan Gamez and Kenneth Poor added 10 points each.
