Saltillo advances in Prairland tournament

Dec. 1, 2007 - Saltillo won its second round games in both the boys and girls division of the Prairiland tournament on Friday, while the Cumby boys lost both of the games in the Miller Grove tournament.

Yantis defeated Miller Grove in the Miller Grove tournament on Friday and will advance to the championship game tonight against Lone Oak at 7:30 pm.


Miller Grove Tournament

Wolfe City 76, Cumby 57

In a battle of district rivals, the Wolfe City Wolves jumped out to a 32-28 lead at the half and led 46-44 after three quarters top win the consolation bracket battle.

Brixx Hawthorne finished the night with 19 points, five steals, four rebounds and two assists, while Kris Stanford had a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

Clem had nine points and four steals, Cook had eight points, four steals and two assists, Luna had four points three rebounds, a steal and an assist.

Yantis 56, Miller Grove 43

MILLER GROVE - The Yantis Owls will face off against Lone Oak in the finals of the Miller Grove basketball tournament at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

The Owls overcame a tenacious Hornet team to win 56-43 and raise the Owls' season record to 8-1.

The Hornets used five first quarter 3-point shots to take a 19-14 lead, but the second quarter belonged to Yantis with the Owls hustling to a 16-2 advantage giving them a 30-21 lead at intermission.

The Owls' rally started on a successful 3-point shot by Cord Burnett followed by a quick bucket from Zach Leatherwood and then a Leatherwood three. The teams fought evenly in the third and Yantis held a 39-31 lead going into the final aquarter.

The Owls opened it up in the final period with 17 points to bring home the win.

Leatherwood's double-double led Yantis with 13 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Randy Smith who hauled in 10 rebounds and scored 11 points. Burnett hit for 12 points, Tony Garcia seven, Bryan Green had seven points to go along with seven rebounds while Jordan Davis added six and Daniel Cerretani had two points.

"I was very pleased with the defensive effort the team showed me tonight. And on offense they were very unselfish and really got after it," Yantis coach Larry Tucker said. "Coach (Gary) Billingsley has done a great job with a young team. They play very tough basketball. My kids did a good job of sharing responsiblilities. If we can improve with each outing, we should be ready for district play in January."

Yan Heijligers led the Hornets with 17 points.

Prairiland Tournament

Rivercrest 54, Saltillo 44

Jocsan Gamez and Steven Mobley scored 11 points each in the Lions' loss on Friday.

Rivercrest got a game-high 16 points from Derek Gallander and 11 from Logan Taylor.

Prairiland Tournament

Saltillo 43, Hooks 25

Saltillo improved its record to 7-1 on the season with an big win over Hooks on Friday.

The Lady Lions defense held Hooks to under 10 points in every quarter.

Saltillo was led by senior Winter Johnson with 17 points. Emily White and Stephanie Methe added seven points each.
